Breathing Easier in the Land of Class Action Lawsuits

Are mass lawsuits against businesses on the decline? As the U.S. Supreme Court reconvened on October 7 for its 2013-14 term, trial lawyers who pursue mass lawsuits are bracing for more setbacks in their pursuit of bringing consumer and employment suits. 

The excesses of plaintiffs’ attorneys have helped to turn the legal tide against class actions in recent years. As an example, in 2007, a group of lawyers received $25 million in fees for what they advertised as a $500 million settlement on behalf of owners of alleged defective Ford Explorer SUVs. However, the fine print revealed that each consumer became eligible for nothing more than a $500 coupon for the purchase of a new Ford. Relatively few people sought the dubious benefit. For more, read the full story.
