Practicing Gratitude During Divorce Process

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it makes you stop and think about what you are grateful for this season.  For me, I’m thankful for my family, my friends, my job, and all the blessings that rain down on me.  But, if I dwelled on only the bad, I would not be able to see those blessings through the trials of life.  The same can be said in the divorce process.  This might seem counterintuitive because the divorce process is known for being contentious, but if you keep focusing on the good—instead of the bad—maybe you can make it through this holiday season with a spirit of gratitude.

1. Therapy

No matter the circumstances surrounding divorce, it is a traumatic time.  You are splitting from a partner that you chose to trust and love, and for whatever reason, that partnership is broken.  Here at Graydon, we care not only about helping you navigating the legal system of divorce, but helping you help yourself and heal.  Therapy is a great way to jump start that process.  If you are in therapy, be grateful! It is not something for which to be ashamed.  You are healing. If you are not in therapy, check it out! It could be what you need to keep your spirits up.

2. Be Honest

Be honest with yourself.  There are tough realities that come with a divorce.  If you are honest with yourself, you can see the ability to grow from the experience.  Harness the power to see goodness amidst the suffering and grow as a person.  Divorce does not have to be as hard as we make it.

3. Reminisce about Good Times

Reminiscing about the good times does wonders for keeping a good perspective.  You obviously married this person for a reason.  At one point, you loved your partner.  You are bound to have good memories.  Focus on that.  If you have children, do not disparage your partner to your kids—after all, that person is a parent to your children.  Tell good stories, build up your ex—no matter how hard that seems now.  After doing that, you will be amazed at how much better you feel.  Let go of any resentment and focus on the good.

4. Support System

Be thankful for your support system.  During divorces, you tend to find out upon which friends and family you can depend.  Appreciate them.  They feel your pain, as well.  Do not forget about that support system.

5. Count Your Blessings!

Divorce gives you a clean slate.  Count your blessings.  You are now able to pick yourself up and start over.  Restructure your life.  Pick up a new hobby.  The sky is the limit! Do not dwell on the bad.  Divorce is never the ideal solution, but if you have come to this point, there is nothing you can do to undo it.  Pick your head up, count your blessings, and be grateful!
